Yesterday as I left the mall I spotted a man and woman standing in the median holding a sign that read, "Have family, out of work. Anything helps. God Bless." Then I noticed the usual guy that hangs out on that corner on my right. He was yelling something at the couple. So the noisy person that I am, I rolled down my window. As I was doing that the single man walked his bike over to the median and continued to yell rude comments to the couple. The man with the woman was saying, nicely I might add, that they do not stand out here often and they had the right just as much as he does to stand out there. He said that he respected him and that he should be respectful to them also. The single man was very upset and was really rude. The man and woman were just about to leave and go home, I heard him say and he apologized to the single man for taking away items or money that would have gone to him if they were not there.
I had to leave then because the light turned green but wondered what else was said. I left with mixed emotions. One, feeling sorry for the man and woman for their hard times. Two, feeling angry that the single guy thought it was his right to have that corner of the street to himself and himself only. I understand that man and woman falling on hard times, I have never seen them before but I do not understand the single man standing out there day after day, which he does! It drives me crazy that people in this county think that it is the responsibility of others to take care of them. I believe in helping others but only those that can help themselves first.
